When to Apply Pre-Emergent in North Texas

Pre-emergent herbicide is the single most important application of the year for a Rockwall lawn, and it’s also the one homeowners get wrong most often. Timing is everything. A pre-emergent applied two weeks late is a pre-emergent that did nothing. Here’s how to get it right.

It’s not a calendar date, it’s a soil temperature.

Every guide on the internet will tell you to apply pre-emergent “in February.” That’s useful only in the same way that “drive at a reasonable speed” is useful. The real answer is a soil temperature, measured at 4-inch depth, holding consistently near 55°F.

In Rockwall County, that window usually lands mid-February to early March, but in a warm year it can arrive the first week of February, and in a cold one it can push into the third week of March. Apply too early and the product breaks down before the weeds germinate. Too late, and the crabgrass is already up.

Do a split spring application for serious control.

A single February pass is fine for most lawns. For lawns that had bad crabgrass pressure the year before, a split application (one in early February, one in mid-March) builds a stronger, longer barrier. The second pass catches any late germination that slipped past the first.

On golf courses, split applications are standard. The pressure on turf is higher, the stakes are higher, and the cost difference is negligible. A residential lawn with persistent crabgrass benefits from the same approach.

Don’t forget the fall pass.

Pre-emergent isn’t only for warm-season weeds. Cool-season weeds, Poa annua, henbit, chickweed, germinate in fall and carry through winter, giving your lawn that ugly patchy look before spring green-up. A mid-September to mid-October application stops them before they start.

Two passes per year, spring and fall, is how a properly maintained lawn stays clean. One pass covers half the job.
