Lawnmower wheels on a healthy lawn — summer heat preparation playbook for North Texas

Summer Heat Prep for North Texas Lawns

July and August are the months that separate a well-managed Rockwall lawn from an average one. When soil temps climb past 95°F and humidity spikes, small mistakes show up fast, fungal disease, insect outbreaks, drought stress. Here’s what a lawn needs in June to survive the next two months looking good.

Raise the mowing height by half an inch.

Whatever your normal mowing height is, add half an inch going into June. Taller grass shades the soil, reduces moisture loss, and keeps roots cooler. Bermuda at 2.5 inches instead of 2 inches. Zoysia at 1.75 instead of 1.25. St. Augustine at a full 4 inches.

The extra canopy also outcompetes summer weeds that germinate in exposed soil.

Water deep and infrequent, not daily shallow.

Daily watering trains roots to live in the top inch of soil. When that inch dries out, the grass suffers immediately. A proper summer watering pattern is 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, delivered in 2–3 deep soakings. Roots grow down toward moisture, and the lawn becomes more drought-tolerant over time.

Water early morning (4–9 AM). Watering at night encourages fungal disease. Watering at noon wastes most of it to evaporation.

Don’t push nitrogen in peak heat.

Quick-release high-nitrogen fertilizer in July is how homeowners burn their lawns. A slow-release, moderate-rate feeding in early July is appropriate; a heavy shot is not. The rule: summer fertilization is for maintenance, not for pushing growth.

If the lawn is actively stressed, wilting by 4 PM, brown tips, postpone fertilization entirely until conditions improve.

“Every August I drive past lawns that were fed right in May and totally abandoned by July. They look it. The lawn doesn’t care about your vacation schedule.”
